Biography of Japanese Painter
Shimazaki Ryuu (1865 - 1937)
Ryuu was born in Edo.
His real given name was Yusuke.
(Ryuu is a pseudonym.)
At first, he learned Western style painting from Sakurai Kenkichi.
Later, he turned his painting style to Japanese.
He learned techniques of the Yosai school from Matsumoto Fuko, and
also learned techniques of the Maruyama school from Kawabata Gyokusho.
Ryuu became a teacher of the Kawabata School of Painting Art (Kawabata
Ga-Gakko).
He also took on the position of executive board member of the Japan Art
Association (Nihon Bijutsu Kyokai).
He was good at painting Japanese beautiful girls (Bijin-ga).
He deceased on January 21 of the 12th year of the Showa era.
