Artist Mori Sosen (1747 - 1821)

Painter at the latter part of the Edo period.
Born in Nagasaki.
His given name is Morikata.
Studied the Kano school painting techniques from Yamamoto Josyunsai.
Influenced by Maruyama Okyo's realism.
Sosen adopted his nephew Mori Tetsuzan who was one of the Okyo's leading disciples.
Sosen was good at painting animals especially monkeys and deer.

Description

The scroll is foxed overall as it was drawn years ago.
There are tears and a few holes at the top part of the mounting.
Spots, stains, amotions and detachment of the drawing part are recognized.
The Makio band is not good.
As a whole, the condition of this scroll is not good.
Although, a bell cricket (Matsumushi) and Autumn flowers are drawn well.
A Japanese poem is also written.
