Female Nanga-style painter.
Seiko was born in 1837 (8th year of the Tenpo era) as the third daughter of Ikeda Jushiro, Samurai retainer of the Koga Domain in Shimousa Province.
Her real given name was Setsu.
Seiko is a pseudonym.
Takami Senseki, famous academian & Karo chief retainer of the domain, is her uncle.
Seiko studied Japanese-style painting under Hirata Suiseki who was a pupil of Tani Buncho, though, she converted to the Nanga style painting later.
And also she researched the styles in China at the Ming and Qing periods.
In 1865, she became an adopted daughter of Okuhara Genzaemon.
After the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Seiko had contacts with many litterateurs and cultural figures under the aegis of Kido Takayoshi.
In 1876, Okakura Tenshin entered her private school.
Seiko deceased in 1913 (2nd year of the Taisho era) at the age of 77.

This scroll was painted in the mid summer of 1900.
It has been re-mounted recently so that there is no spots on the mounting.
There are spots and stains to some extent on the drawing part.
As a whole, the condition of this scroll is not so bad.
Minamoto no Yoshiie (1039-1106), famous and strong Samurai warrior in the Heian period is painted vividly.
He is wearing Kabuto helmet, Yoroi armor & Tachi Samurai sword, and holding Yumi bow & golden Sensu Japanese fan.
