Watanabe Shukei (1865 - 1940)

Shukei was born in Owari Province (present Aichi Prefecture) at the end of the Samurai period.
His real given name was Eikichi.
Shukei is a pseudonym.
First, he studied the Shijo style painting under Okumura Sekiran.
Later, Shukei became a disciple of Kubota Beisen, and became a teacher of the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting.
After 3 years of stay in Kyoto, he went back to Nagoya and established a private school to caltivate painters.
In his last days, Shukei dedicated himself to draw the Nanga style paintings.
He deceased in the 15th year of the Showa era at the age of 76.

Description

The scroll is slightly foxed overall as it was drawn years ago.
There are some spots on the painting part.
Although, the condition of this scroll is not bad.
A landscape view in light rain is drawn well in the Nanga painting style with only black Sumi ink.
