Biography of Japanese Painter

Kushiro Unzen (1759 - 1811)

Nanga style painter at the latter part of the Edo period.
Unzen was born in 1759 as a son of samurai of Shimabara Domain.
He liked painting from his childhood.
Unzen went to Nagasaki as his father was sent to the place, then he studied the Nanga style painting under a Chinese man.
After his father died, Unzen visited many provinces in Japan and had relationships with many painters and literary persons.
He loved drinking.
Unzen is pen name.
The name derives from Unzen Mountain near his home town.
He suddenly died after drinking sake on December 31 of 1811.
